medical and scientific illustration

I come from a long family line of creatives. My mother was a fashion designer, my sister a professional dancer. There are too many painters and graphic designer aunts, uncles, and cousins to even count. As the first person to pursue a career in healthcare I bridge the gap between my artistic sensibilities and my love for medical science through illustration for posters and publications.

Title: Human Nature (No. 1)

Medium: Charcoal, Acrylic, and Dried Botanicals on Illustration Board, 2023 (30'' x 20'')

Description: As an amateur horticulturalist, I felt inspired to utilize preserved plant specimens from my garden to add dimension and texture to a depiction of the anatomical heart. Emphasizing use of medicinal and native plants I included the foxglove flower, seen in the auricles. Foxgoves (Digitalis lantana) are used in the pharmaceutical production of Digoxin, a cardiac glycoside drug used for treatment of congestive heart failure. The medicinal use of this plant was first documented in herbal medicine of the mid-eighteenth century. The connections between the botanical world and human medicine have always been fascinating to me, and my goal as an artist is to continue exploring these relationships. This piece was sold at auction with all proceeds benefiting Safehouse Denver.
